17th-century paper legal documents and correspondence in Italian and Latin regarding the acquisition, sale, and maintenance of property in the Monte Cavallo section of the Quirinal Hill in Rome. Many are copies of 15th- and 16th-century legal documents. The same property is also discussed in Ms. Codex 1545, Ms. Codex 1547, and Misc Mss 28. The documents discuss events as far back as 1450, but mostly document events in the 1600s. The property was initially sold by Archbishop of Taranto Franciscus Columna (also referred to as Francesco Colonna) to Petrus Antonius Bandinus (also referred to as Pierantonio Bandini). While the property remained in the hands of the Bandini family for at least most of the 1600s (in the early 1600s Cardinal Johannes Bandinus, also known as Giovanni Bandini, seems to have been the primary property holder), a series of other predominately ecclesiastical families appear to be vying for the property, including the Maffei, Caetani, Giugni (sometimes misspelled Guigni), Nappi, Niccolini, Rinuccini, Galeotti, and Arrighi families, as well as Pope Paul V and members of the Jesuit order (examples in Folder 20). Recurring figures include Cardinal and later Archbishop Ottavio Bandini, Agostino Maffei, Marchese Cassandra Bandini Giugni, Marchese Niccolo Giugni, Duke Jacopo Salviati, Giovanbattista Butti, Girolamo Gini, Bernardo Guido Arrighi, Filippo Nappi, and Francesco Niccolini. Most of the documents are legal ones, including inventories, civil proceedings, notes, financial documents, and verdicts. Several of the documents contain dated summaries of the events regarding the Monte Cavallo property. The bulk of the correspondence is from the Maffei, Nappi, and Niccolini families in the mid-late 17th century. Many of the documents contain notarial signatures, including that of Julius Olivellus (also referred to as Giulio Olivelli). Some of the documents contain wax seals.
